I created a Dusk scene where the light was very warm, gave it a 50-percent brightness level, and scheduled it to come on at sunset, and it worked like a charm. The Being responded instantly to my app commands to turn the light on and off and change color temperatures, and it also responded quickly to my Alexa and Siri voice commands. The warmest setting provides a nice soft light similar to what you get from an incandescent bulb, while the coolest setting is very bright. The app searched for the Being light, found it within seconds, and I created a name and a room (you can add it to an existing room if you prefer). To add the Being light to my Hue Bridge, I simply turned on the light, opened the Hue app, tapped Settings, and selected Light Setup and Add Light. I restored power to the circuit, flipped the switch, and the fixture lit up. Next, I attached the Being fixture to the mounting plate using the three nuts (included) and reattached the cover. I connected the fixture wires to the wires in my junction box with wire nuts (not included), then attached the mounting plate to the box. There are only three wires: the black wire is hot, white is neutral, and green is ground. I had to take the Being fixture apart to separate the mounting plate from the fixture to get to the wires, but that was simply a matter of unscrewing the silver plate on the light cover. To start, I turned off power to the circuit and removed the old fixture.

It took me around 15 minutes to remove my existing ceiling fixture and install the Being. If you're not comfortable with either, play it safe and hire a pro. Installation is fairly easy if you're replacing an existing fixture, but it requires knowledge of home wiring and shutting down power to the circuit. Unlike the Philips Hue White Ambiance Bulb and the Hue White and Color Ambiance Lily Outdoor Spot Light Kit, the Hue Being is a fixture and must be hardwired to a junction box. Advanced settings include home location parameters and a setting that lets you fine-tune sunset and sunrise start times. The Settings button takes you to a screen where you can connect to your lights from anywhere using your phone, add a new bridge, set up rooms and add lights to each one, and add new lights and accessories such as Hue dimmer switches and motion sensors.

The Apps We Like section lists third-party entertainment apps and utilities that work with Hue, and the Hue Labs section shows you how to use formulas to have Alexa and Siri make your lights change colors, fade in and out, and run through a playlist of Scenes. In the Explore menu you can use the Friends of Hue section to learn about how to make Hue lights work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri, and Microsoft Cortana voice commands, as well as home automation platforms such as Nest, Vivint Smart Home, SmartThings, Comcast Infinity, Logitech Harmony, and IFTTT. You can also create custom on/off routines based on sunrise, sunset, and specific times of day.
